Le Gallienne, Richard Thomas
(1866-1947)
   Born in Liverpool, of Channel Islands descent, he was educated at Liverpool College and started off in accountancy, then decided on a literary career. From 1888 to 1891, he was secretary to the London actor-manager Wilson Barrett, then he was employed as book reviewer for the Star, using the pseudonym "Log-roller." He became reader for Bodley Head when the firm published his Volumes in Folio in 1889. From 1901 to 1927 he lived in the United States, writing mainly for newspapers and magazines. He spent the last years of his life in the south of France, continuing to write for the American press, mainly about life in Paris, and died at Menton, where he is buried. The Silk-Hat Soldier and Other Poems in War Time, 1915. Some of his poems: "A Ballad of London," "A Melton Mowbray Pork Pie," "Brooklyn Bridge at Dawn," "Death in a London Lodging," "Matthew Arnold," "The City in Moonlight."
